About
Dr. Amandia Speakes-Lewis is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Work. She teaches courses in, human behavior across the lifespan, child and adolescent trauma HIV/AIDS and capstone. She has a strong mental health background and clinical practice. Her goal as an educator is to create a learning environment where knowledge is shared rather than distributed, challenged rather than accepted and built upon. Her instructional techniques allow students to develop skill through critical thinking to advance their understanding of practice in a world outside of the classroom. Her research agenda has explored HIV, case management, HIV & older adults, microaggressions, burnout and provider self-care.
Dr. Speakes-Lewis has a certification in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and has presented both locally and nationally on her research topics. She is a published authored multiple scholarly articles and book chapters related to HIV, older adults, mental health, microaggressions, DEI, and social emotional learning.
Dr. Speakes-Lewis is currently an advisory board member for the Caribbean American Social Work Association. She was appointed in 2018 and served three years on the to the Nassau County Department of Aging Advisory Council. She is an active member of Nassau/Suffolk Black Social Workers Association, National Association for Christians in Social Work, as well as Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority Inc. and Sister Providing Opportunities Charitable Alliance, Inc.
