About

I am a Professor of Nursing at Molloy University, and my area of research is skin cancer prevention.
I have been involved with skin cancer prevention research since 2006. I have volunteered with the Mollie Biggane Melanoma Foundation for the past decade and have educated the public and nursing community about skin cancer. Nurses are uniquely positioned to educate the public and screen for skin cancers. Patients deserve to know the dramatic increase in skin cancer in recent years.  Nurses are very much involved in health assessment, promotion, and education. They routinely educate the community regarding healthy behaviors. When nurses educate patients and others about sun-protective behaviors, they decrease morbidity and mortality., I assisted Molloy Nursing students in writing a resolution for the National Student Nurses Association on mandating skin cancer education in all nursing curricula, and it was successfully passed. I have had the honor to present my work nationally and internationally. I have presented in Prague, Ireland, Norway, Spain and Italy., My research has been quasi-experimental studies using a skin analyzer machine to increase knowledge and change perception and behavior. I have also studied skin cancer education using human simulation and moulages. My most recent study incorporates online education. One of my studies was based in a hospital, teaching nurses to teach patients about skin cancer, and since that study, many hospitals and hospital systems have adopted the educational tool patient education used to educate patients about skin cancer.  In addition to skin cancer research, I arranged, along with the Mollie Biggane Foundation, to have an Annual Skin Cancer Screening at Molloy University. It has been very successful, and we have screened over 80 people with the help of volunteer Dermatologists. Skin cancers have been detected, and people have been educated about skin cancer and sun- sun-protective behaviors. With the assistance of the Mollie
Biggane Foundation, I installed six sunscreen dispensers on the Molloy University campus, contributing to the designation of Molloy University as a skin-safe campus.
