Abstract

Policing in New York City has often been an exercise in extremes. Mayors Rudy Giuliani and Mike Bloomberg were overly aggressive crimefighters, while Mayor de Blasio, elected on a platform of police reform, overreacted to the errors of the previous era and handcuffed the police. In de Blasio’s last years in office violent crime and shootings skyrocketed. The recent funerals of two brave police officers serve to highlight the challenges confronting Mayor Adams.
