Abstract
This diverse combination of endocrine effects by opiates, cocaine, and cannabis may be of utmost importance in terms of our understanding of both differences and similarities in the progression from misuse to addiction, as well as our understanding of overlap in the abuse of these different classes of drugs, with distinct patterns of abuse in polydrug abusers. Further, the normalization of endocrine disruption has been observed to be an important factor in the successful development of pharmacotherapeutics for opiate addiction and is an important consideration in the investigation of potential therapeutics for cocaine and cannabis addiction .
